Personal Quest XP idea (draft)

Quest XP Deadly encounter of highest level character for the party. XP bonanza and leveling up is sweet.

2 quests at a time (maybe) – We can decide as a party what constitutes a ‘quest’. We can detail quests in a quest log, you can choose which quest or party goal you wish to pursue for this session or next session. This can be changed as we see fit. This is mainly to define what the party is focused on and trying to achieve.

Current – To rid the place of the Sahaugin so that the ships can come into Port Stricken.

Personal goal . One personal goal per session. Goals can be based on things such as: The situation (currently in a dungeon looking for the Hucrele children and hearing about a Druid named Belak and the Malthius tree), The party (maybe you want to know more about a character, maybe you want to protect a character from danger) maybe you want to help a character achieve something).

Goals can combine with the overall quest goal but should be something you look to achieve in the session. They are short term and are designed to give your character a small focus for the session. The character goals are also a way for the DM to see what your characters are interested in exploring / doing. If everyone writes RP focused goals… that is what I will try and provide. If they are all combat focused, that is what the party wants.

Goals can call for a specific scene. If you wish to frame a scene for your character this is fine, but will have to play test how much time this takes if everyone wants an individual scene.

XP for an individual

Easy = Medium encounter for your level

Hard = Hard encounter for you level

RP focused or mechanics focused. A roll must be involved.

Example – My goal is to use minor illusion to start a fight among a group of enemies.

My goal is to have Raen tell me about her time as a captive slave. (this goal would be great for RP opportunities)

My goal is to restrain an NPC while firing my hand crossbow at another enemy.

My goal is to question an NPC about the Malthius tree and what its magic does.

Sabrina example = My goal is to talk us out of more fighting with goblins. I will know I have achieved this if no other goblins are killed by the party.

Goals need to be of substance related to an issue in the game or the situation at hand. Not “I make Roger laugh”, “Roger laughs”, oh yeah! free XP!

Playtest - as with all new / hacked rules this will be a test ground. Your input and feedback is essential to making a working system that works for our group. It doesn’t need to be something that works for DnD as a whole. The design philosophy is to have a mechanism to gain XP that you can work for which is not hacking the limbs off enemies.

Burning Wheel - The heart of this idea comes from the burning wheel rpg. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1xtywr7Ax0L3bOnFEsi2Lqmf7XJ2JP7Ll pg 53 – 55. The section on Beliefs.

Office Hours Episode 79 – Use the Past or Bury It, Goal XP, Streaming It Office Hours – Adam Koebel – question 2 about 34 minutes in.

This stuff is just for those who are obsessed like me really. No need to check any of it out but it will give you a better understanding of the intentions. Clearly this is Adam’s idea. I tried to think about marrying Burning Wheel beliefs into DnD previously but am lazy. So why not just use those who do this for a living :P.

XP thresholds by character level for the amount of experience to give per personal / party quest. Need to scroll down slightly.
